    Newz you can uze.
Anton Nossik claims that he never used the word 'idiot' in his recent interview.

    He's lying.

Anyway, fannish pimping: [info]the_other_reese for those of you (by which I mean the majority of SCC fandom) who has become completely smitten with one Derek Reese. *shoos you all in that direction*

On Books: I finished the pornography book. I'll give them some credit on the invalidity of the argument form, as the authors seemed to realize this and worked hard to show why all pornography is equivalent to a snuff film (if you remember, the first chapter started out with "all snuff films are pornography, then all pornography is or is equivalent to a snuff film", which a fallacy: if all cats are mammals, does this mean that all mammals are cats?). I'll also give it something of a charitable leeway for being an older book, written immediately after the backlash decade, so a certain amount of paranoia is expected. However, a later chapter actually included the argument that a woman's demand for sexual freedom (to participate in BDSM scenarios, or even to engage in "degrading" sexual acts, which the book never really defines*...fellatio, I think?) is no more defensible than giving a man sexual freedom to rape, and wow. That was the point at which I scribbled "DELIBERATELY OBTUSE" in big letters in the margins, took it back (yeah, I defaced a library book, future students can use it the same way that I use other people's underlinings), and moved on.

Ironically, I've also been reading the Russian-to-English translation of Nightwatch, the book that the movie is based upon. I can't speak of how well it functions as a translation, but as a book in and of itself: :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

*It's not the job of any minority to educate the oppressing party. Unless they're writing an entire book which is structured as an argument, in which case it kinda helps.

    Lost 4.08-"Meet Kevin Johnson"
Mis(Guided) turns out to be verra cute and clever. And also seals the deal on something that I've suspected for some time, which is that Ashton Kutcher is really quite smart. I don't know what to do with that. But! The lead actress is quite adorkably endearing, and they really do slide a lot of adult humor through for being at 7 p.m. "Riding him bareback" was a line this evening, which is right up there with, "You won an award for a rimjob?" and I choked on my water.

Oh, show, sometimes you just make me wiggling-puppy kinds of happy. )

    Current Mood: happy
